Helen Marshall feeds Ben, a 30-year-old bear that currently lives at the Spruce Haven Zoo. Marie, said the survey was launched earlier this week by Zoocheck and the results will be forwarded to the mayor and council. The petition, as well as discussion by Saultites and others, is growing on social media sites like Facebook. Zoocheck states it has had several of its third-party expert’s visit and assess the conditions at the west-end zoo in recent years and has found the facility to be unsafe and the animals inadequately housed. The most recent check, completed last summer by Dr. Martyn Obbard, a retired Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources employee, specifically commented on the living quarters for the African lion, cougar, black bear and wolf. CAZA counters that it approached Hupponen to discuss the issues and was turned away. It has now written a letter to the mayor and council offering its assistance and expertise. “Zoocheck has a goal and that goal is to close zoos because they don’t believe they contribute to society,” Shafer said. “But animals in captivity have to be considered in an individual basis because they adapt to their setting.” She said sanctuaries that are not accredited and are not always the better choice and there, some animals may be bullied by others. “Refusing input from national standards development organizations is deceitful to the residents of Sault Ste. Marie,” Shafer said. Zoocheck’s campaign director, Julie Woodyer, says it has offered to relocate the animals to sanctuaries at no cost to Spruce Haven or the zoo so that the animals can live their lives in more enhanced conditions. She would not reveal the exact location of where the animals would be relocated. Woodyer admitted that Obbard did not identify himself to Spruce Haven Zoo owners during his recent visit and did not ask owners any questions about the facilities or their qualifications. “We know in the past they won’t talk to us and are not open to any discussion and they’ve seen the reports in the past and the issues haven’t been dealt with,” Woodyer said in a telephone interview. Obbard, who spent years in the wildlife research department of the ministry conducting long-term studies on ecology, population dynamics and behaviour of black bears in various parts of Ontario, has findings similar to those reports commissioned in the past by Zoocheck.  The report concludes that Spruce Haven Zoo does not meet the needs of carnivores housed there and the zoo, itself, is not meeting several regulations under the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
